Emotional Intelligence and Empathic Accuracy in Friendships and Dating Relationships

According to Salovey, Hsee, and Mayer [1], there are three primary domains of emotional intelligence: the accurate appraisal and expression of emotion, the adaptive regulation of emotions, and the use of emotions to plan, create, and motivate action. The present chapter focuses on the first domain as it relates to friends and dating partners, and we expand this focus to include the accurate appraisal of other people's thoughts as well as their feelings. For nearly two decades now, the topic of inferring others' thoughts and feelings has been addressed by a field of study known as empathic accuracy. Empathic accuracy involves “reading” people's thoughts and feelings on a moment-to-moment basis; it is, by definition, a measure of the ability to accurately infer the specific content of these successive thoughts and feelings [2–3]. In the sections to follow, we draw on available theory and research to discuss the role of empathic accuracy and emotional intelligence in the relationships of friends and dating partners.
